New Coronation Street star admits: ‘I nearly panicked’ during debut

James Cartwright from Coronation Street made an honest confession on Lorraine this Wednesday.

On Wednesday (July 2), Corrie’s new cast member James Cartwright revealed he “almost had a panic attack.”

The 40-year-old actor, who portrays Theo Silverton in the hit ITV soap, appeared on today’s Lorraine to talk about his character’s upcoming storyline.

However, the discussion took an unexpected twist when James made a frank admission that left Lorraine Kelly momentarily speechless.

Lorraine opened with, “So good to see you,” and James answered promptly, “It’s a pick-me-up, Lorraine.”

After viewing a scene where his character Theo has a panic attack, James confessed, “I have to say, I nearly felt a panic attack myself this morning before coming here, because I’ve got something to admit,” according to Leicestershire Live.

“My confession is that you’re my celebrity crush,” he said, prompting a surprised Lorraine to respond, “Oh, behave!”

James went on to explain, “Ever since I was a kid wearing shorts and you were rocking those shoulder pads, I’d sit with my grandma and watch you on TV. You’re amazing, full of energy and sparkle… I just had to tell you that.”

Lorraine replied with a smile, “Oh, bless you! Celebrity crushes can be funny, can’t they?”

In another part of the interview, James hinted at a “dark” storyline involving Todd Grimshaw as his relationship with Theo develops on Coronation Street.

Todd and Theo first met in March, when it was revealed that Theo is married to a woman named Danielle (played by Natalie Anderson), and they have two children together.

Theo opened up to Todd about the difficulty he’s faced in concealing his sexuality, stemming from his deeply religious parents who subjected him to conversion therapy when he was younger.

James explained on today’s Lorraine, “The idea that you can change your sexuality is false—you can no more change it than you can change the color of your eyes.”

He added, “It simply is what it is, and I think it’s an important topic to explore, especially since many people aren’t aware this kind of thing happens, but it does.”

Lorraine added, “You just wouldn’t, no way you would, and that’s why it’s so crucial that Corrie is addressing this issue—they handle it so well.”

James indicated that Todd may encounter peril, following the mounting concern from fans in recent times.

Theo’s unpredictable actions have been worrying, as he frequently directs his anger at both others and himself.

“You can’t reveal too much, but it sounds like things are going to get a bit dark with you, the love triangle, and Todd,” Lorraine pressed.

James replied, “I believe it does head in that direction. Theo is a very complex character. While I don’t think he’s malicious or a psychopath or sociopath, he’s definitely complicated.”

“People carry their baggage with them, and as you grow older, you realize they don’t really change. You want to change them, but you can’t. So what do you do when you love them?”
