Philip Lowrie, known for playing Dennis Tanner in the very first episode of Coronation Street, has passed away at the age of 88, as confirmed by his publicist.

Renowned for his role as Dennis Tanner in Coronation Street, the actor has died at the age of 88. His passing was confirmed by his publicist, according to reports from the Mirror.

His manager, Mario Renzullo, issued a heartfelt statement: “My client and dear friend, Philip Lowrie, the cherished actor best known for portraying Dennis Tanner on Coronation Street, passed away yesterday at the age of 88.”

“His passing signifies the end of an era for the world’s longest-running soap, where he was a key figure in its storytelling.”

In the wake of the sad news, a wave of tributes flooded online, with one fan commenting: “So heartbroken to hear about the death of Philip Lowrie, who portrayed Dennis Tanner in Coronation Street. He appeared in the very first episode nearly 65 years ago.”

Another fan shared: “So sad to hear about the passing of Philip Lowrie. Dennis Tanner was a character full of mischief, and I always hoped he’d return to #Corrie. I’m sure Dennis lives on, as his off-screen death in 2020 must have been yet another one of his scams! RIP to a true Coronation St. original.”

Lowrie made his debut on the soap in its very first episode in 1960 at the age of 24. He portrayed Dennis Tanner, the son of Pat Phoenix’s character, Elsie Tanner, until 1968.

In 2011, he made a return to the cobbles, earning a Guinness World Record for the longest gap between TV appearances as the same character in the same show. “I’ve always been proud to have been part of the original cast of Coronation Street,” Lowrie said at the time.

Philip’s last appearance as Dennis Tanner was in July 2014. Outside of his iconic role on Corrie, Lowrie also graced the West End stage, playing Major Metcalf in The Mousetrap and Klever in The Case of the Frightened Lady.

Philip also made appearances on TV in shows such as Doctors, Casualty, and Andy Capp.
