“Coronation Street’s Kevin Webster actor knows nothing about cars off-screen, reveals new cast member.”

“Despite playing mechanic Michael Webster for 42 years, he still doesn’t know much about cars, admits newcomer Jonathan Howard.”

Michael Le Vell has portrayed Coronation Street mechanic Kevin Webster for 42 years, but his co-star says he still doesn’t have a clue about cars. Jonathan Howard, 38, who recently joined the ITV soap as Kevin’s half-brother Carl, expected Michael to have picked up some automotive know-how after decades of pretending to fix motors on screen.

However, he was surprised to discover that neither Michael nor Alan Halsall – who plays fellow mechanic Tyrone Dobbs – actually ‘know too much’ about cars in real life.

Jonathan, whose credits include TV shows like Dream Team, Mr Selfridge, and Downton Abbey, as well as films World War Z and Thor: The Dark World, joked that the only thing he’d picked up from the pair was how to fiddle with engine parts just enough to make it look like you know what you’re doing.

He told Inside Soap magazine: “I’m not exactly a car expert.

“You’d imagine that after spending so much time with Tyrone and Kevin, they’d have picked up a few tips and tricks.”

“Still, they’ve taught me a few on-set tricks – like which engine parts you can safely mess with to make it seem like you know what you’re doing.”

Michael, 60, is one of Coronation Street’s longest-running cast members, having first appeared on the show back in 1983.

He’s called it the “best job in television.”

Alan, 42, became part of the cast in 1998 and took home the Outstanding Serial Drama Performance award at the 2013 National Television Awards.

He came in sixth place on the 24th series of I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! last November.
